The Columbus Instruments Urine Freezer can preserve urine samples from lab animal metabolic cages as it is excreted. Typical specimen collection at room temperature permits evaporation; considering that only a few milliliters are produced daily, collecting significant quantities for analysis has been difficult. Additionally, frozen specimens are protected from chemical changes which take place at room temperature. The Columbus Instruments Urine/Specimen Freezer has the ability to freeze a full 10 ml of urine in under 10 minutes, to a temperature 30蚓 below room temperature. When in use in a live experiment, the fractions of millimeters produced at a time are almost instantly frozen as soon as they reach the collection vessel.
The Urine Freezer uses two thermo-electric coolers per collection vessel. The temperature can be adjusted on the power source by changing the amount of current supplied to the coolers. Each power supply can accommodate 4 urine freezers. Power specs: 110VAC, 1,200 Watts. Each urine freezer weighs 3 lbs. (1.4 Kg). Contact Columbus Instruments for special electrical requirements for 220VAC, or on applications larger than 4 cages.
