The Mouse Pressure-Volume System is configured for measurement of left ventricular pressure (LVP) and volume in mice hearts. The SPR-839 Pressure-Volume Catheter allows for the sensors to be directly placed into the left ventricle of the heart for simultaneous measurement of pressure and volume. The ultra-miniature catheters can be used in mice as small as 16 grams. The catheter can be used for measuring left ventricular pressure and volume in either closed or open-chest surgical procedures and in isolated working heart preparations. The system includes a PowerLab, Pressure-Volume Unit, Chart and PVAN software to provide all of the essential tools for acquisition and analysis of cardiac function in small animals.

There are many advantages to using Millar Pressure-Volume catheters including:
  • Very little set-up and maintenance required – no fluid-filled catheters to prepare or maintain during experimentation.
  • High frequency response – accurately detects and represents signals of varying frequencies without loss of data information.
  • Signal integrity – the true waveform is represented with no distortion at high signal frequencies.
  • No signal artifacts – no dampening of signals due to air bubbles, or blockages in the catheter.
  • Sensor positioned at the tip – detection of signal at the signal source.
  • Pressure and volume are measured using a single catheter

The 8-channel PowerLab 8/30 data acquisition system provides the ability to record LVP and volume along as well as the opportunity to simultaneously measure other physiological parameters such as temperature and ECG with the appropriate Signal Conditioners and Transducers. The MPVS-300 Pressure-Volume Unit provides three analog outputs, two pressure and one volume channel, for measuring LVP and volume signals and connecting to PowerLab. The combined pressure and volume signals can be plotted to generate pressure-volume loops which are used to determine cardiac function. Chart allows the simultaneous recording and display of up to 16 channels of data online or offline. These may include left ventricular pressure, left ventricular volume, heart rate, rate of pressure change (dP/dt), rate of volume change (dV/dt), systolic and end-diastolic pressure. Signals, including pressure-volume plots, can be displayed and calculated online whilst recording. Recording channels can be easily calibrated into meaningful units such as mmHg. Chart data files can be easily imported into PVAN software for additional offline analysis. The PVAN software provides the ability to calculate many specific hemodynamic parameters. The complete Pressure-Volume system provides the essential tools for the assessment of cardiovascular performance in a number of applications including; phenotyping gene manipulations, cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac failure, cardiovascular remodeling, pharmacology/toxicology and vascular occlusions in small animals.
