8-WBO-1A Isolation Chambers & Wisconsin Type Boxes

Isolation chambers from Crist Instrument Co., Inc. are ideal for studies that include audio, physiological, or visual activities and/or Touch sensitive monitors. These enclosures may be custom designed to meet your specific requirements with a variety of options. You may include a variety of reward systems, e.g. liquid, solid, or slurries (See Section 5). Other features that can be added include fixtures to support closed circuit television monitoring, forced ventilation, or one-way viewing, or activity devices; e. g. joy sticks and push buttons.

Some Custom features of the Wisconsin type box can have counter-weighted vertical doors. Other custom features can also be incorporated. These available features include: acoustical materials, castors, 12 volt lighting fixtures, and additional or fewer openings.

The basic Chambers are 29.2” (74.2cm) wide x 38.5” (97.8cm) deep x 53” (134.7cm) high. The chambers come equipped with double opening doors at one end and a set of double doors on either the left or right side. (Side doors will be on the left side unless the right side is specified at time of order) All doors come with spring-loaded latches. Opposite from the double doors that are located on the end is a 15” x 13.5” (38.12cm x 34.30cm) port for a television monitor and an external shelf for a television that is 16” x 19” (40.66cm x 48.28cm). The shelf is vertically adjustable. The top of the box includes one 4” x 4” (10.16cm x 10.16cm) access port with a closing cover. The box interior includes a track and locking devices to secure your primate chair in the position your protocol requires. Surfaces of the chamber sides are covered in white Formica (outside), and black Formica on the interior. Each panel of your chamber is completely wrapped with Formica thus providing a completely water-tight surface. The isolations chambers are also available in copper shielding to reduce RF interference in recording studies as another option. Additionally, between the interior and exterior walls is one inch (2.54cm) of insulation to reduce any extraneous sounds, either entering or emitting from the box. Thicker acoustics can be added to the wall panels on special request.

Each side of the box and each door panel are built as separate units. Easy disassembly facilitates transport from one location to another using our design. This design also makes it possible to assemble our isolation chambers in rooms with doorways too small to accommodate the passage of an assembled box. We normally ship chambers assembled and ready for immediate use.

When setting up experiments with isolation chambers, you may find it necessary to use the appropriate low chair trolley design to avoid heavy lifting and to allow easy transfers from the low trolley base to the isolation chamber positioner. The Chair Trolley is designed to match the same height as the Isolation Box Slide positioner (See Transport Trolleys in Section 1).

8-WBO-1AF ISOLATION CHAMBER

Isolation Chamber, Basic Unit includes: Double opening doors at box back, TV Monitor Port with Shelf at Box Front, Double Opening Doors on both sides, 1 access at Top. All surfaces are finished with a White Formica Exterior and a Black Formica Interior. One inch of insulation fills the interior spaces of each side, top and bottom panel of your chamber.

8-WBR-01 Isolation Chamber, for Rodents

Crist Instrument Co., Inc. now makes custom rodent chambers that are similar to chambers for primate studies, but much smaller. Chambers for rodent isolation or other purposes can be custom made to your exact specifications.

8-WBO-2 Isolation Chambers, New World Primates or Smaller Animals

This chamber is designed to accommodate our Mini Chair. All of the options available for our standard isolation chambers are also available for this smaller isolation chamber design. In its basic form, this chamber is small enough to sit on a table or stand, which can bring the subject to the investigator’s eye level.

Laboratory INSTALLATIONS

CDLAB The Custom Designed Laboratory and Installation

If you choose to have Crist Instrument Co., Inc. custom design and install your laboratory, we will strive to meet your specific needs. Working closely with you, we will help to determine the mechanical equipment and apparatus required to take your investigations forward and configure the best and most effective layout in the space assigned. We will design, manufacture, and modify much of the equipment you require or assist you in locating any off-the-shelf equipment that we do not supply. Additionally, we can provide shelving, counter tops, and table tops with an easy to clean, laminated or resin finish as required Equipment is installed in your lab to the most exacting specifications.

As you review our standard products, listed in this catalog, you may see that we already have equipment to meet your needs. If not, these standard products may at least give you some ideas of similar products that will aid you in your research. Crist Instrument Co., Inc. specializes in the design and manufacture of custom-made and modified equipment. In the case that no product is listed that precisely fits your requirements, please contact us, and our Product Specialists will be happy to assist you.

Most full laboratory installation projects consist of three phases: (1) consultation and planning, which may include a site visit; (2) design and manufacture of the required apparatus and equipment; (3) installation of the completed apparatus and equipment at your laboratory site. Our work is priced and billed based upon the three phases. Generally, each of the three phases progress as follows:

Phase 1 Consultation and Planning

Consultation includes a site visit and a detailed discussion of your individual needs. A set of drawings showing the layout and placement of the equipment you have determined is necessary for your investigations is sent for your approval. Concept sketches of your customized equipment are included in this phase. Upon your approvals, the laboratory installation program moves into Phase 2.

Phase 2 Design and Manufacture of Apparatus and Equipment

During this phase, we will complete the designs, manufacture, and/or procure the equipment your lab will need. The duration of this phase will mainly depend upon the type of equipment your lab requires. The quantity and specifications of design work required for new equipment, the amount of time it will take us to manufacture your equipment, and/or the time it will take for other suppliers to provide their equipment are time factors during this phase. During Phase 2, detailed drawing of custom equipment are made and sent for your approval by our engineers. After your approvals, the equipment is fabricated in our facility to meet our exacting specifications.

Our pricing structure for this phase is $100.00 per hour for design time and $80.00 per hour for shop time, plus materials and other related expenses. Customized Electronics design is $120.00 per hour and labor for customized electronics is $80.00 per hour. Some apparatus, such as chairs, stereotaxic devices, and other small items, may be shipped in advance and billed prior to the main installation. Forward shipping of these items permits training time for your animals before beginning your research as well as other activities you may need to perform.

Phase 3 Installation of Your Laboratory

Due to our extensive experience setting up various types of labs, we have found that we can reduce the time between your space assignment and the onset of your investigations significantly. As an example, for one vision lab the average time of completion can be reduced to 35-45 hours or on site installation. This time may vary depending upon your individual requirements. In most cases, we have found that our experienced crew will move in and out quickly. When we are finished, your lab is ready for your use.

Billing for this phase depends upon your lab’s installation requirements, for example: necessary set up time, the number of crew members required, travel expenses, travel time, labor rate on travel, room and board, insurance, shipping expenses, etc. These requirements vary depending on your location and other specific requirements.

CUSTOMIZED INSTALLATION Equipment

We will install your laboratory equipment, insuring proper positioning and placement. A variety of suspension systems, hoists, and benches can be custom made to meet your requirements. Listed below are a variety of systems and subsystems that have been custom designed for other labs installed by Crist Instrument Co., Inc.

8-LCH-II Trapeze

This system effectively mounts and suspends equipment from walls or ceilings. This provides a clear floor area, which enables the movement of various pieces of equipment in and out of the tasking area and easy cleaning.

8-LCH-12 Coil Elevator Hoist

This motorized lift is designed for use with a 36-inch or larger coil. It makes moving the search coil in and out of the work area a simple task and allows the primate chair to be rolled into and out of position beneath the coil with ease.

8-LCH-15 Coil Hinge

The coil hinge swings the search coil to one side or to the back for easier placement and removal of items beneath the coil. It is particularly useful when the ceiling area directly above the search coil contains structural equipment that prohibits the use of hoist systems. Though the coil hinge is designed to minimize interference with equipment that is suspended above, it requires more floor space than the hoist.

8-LCR-M Computer Rack Modifications

Computer racks can be modified to accommodate your work style. Modification packages include:

• The connection of racksin a series with strategically placed power strips to accommodate yourequipment. The addition of Panduit raceways that can be added to collect and coordinate theorganized distribution of individual cables and grounding straps that can be added to provide a single consistent ground, preventing ground loop.
• Shelving that can be custom-designed for installation of apparatus within the racks.
• Desktops and workbenches (made from black laminate or resin) that can be added to the fronts of your racks facilitating work directly at the Rack site.

This bench’s sturdy steel base comes with a six-outlet power strip. The top is covered in black laminate or lab resin surface for easy cleaning.

8-LPS-W1 Projector Shelf

When using a projector or monitor, the projector shelf allows co-related equipment can be mounted above or behind the optical bench. It is covered with black laminate for easy cleaning.

This shelf allows you to mount your encoder in a convenient area. The encoder shelf is covered with black laminate for easy cleaning.
